Breath for Yoga and Singing
Haven’t posted in ages and doubt that this is going to improve much given how busy we are at work, but I just wanted to put this down for posterity.
I have been practicing fairly gentle hatha yoga for some time now and have dabbled with Vinyasa flow and also taken up a now-interrupted Anusara class. Part of this was due to problems with my knees - years of poor alignment and training for a...

Getting fit - P90X Lean
I posted a while ago that I was embarking on the P90X lean journey in order to get fitter for Kota Kinabalu. Well, I’m now into week 3, ‘tho mind you, I am not following it religiously - how can someone with any life at all follow an exercise program that calls for you to manage an hour to an hour and a half of exercise 6x a week?
I’m not the 5:30am wakeup call for exercise...

10 Characters You May Encounter in Yoga Class. |... →
Oh yes, we’ve all been there. I’d like to add:
The OM-averse - the lady who comes to Yoga class in her best Adidas top and leopard-skin pants; pushes through every Asana and then runs for the hills claiming a late appointment (at 9pm? Every class?) when it comes to talks on diet and meditation, or even an extended meditation.

How to Find Peace of Mind in Under 500 Words |... →
Great post from Tiny Buddha’s blog - in 2 words “Practice and Patience”.
I like this bit especially.
Let these random thoughts pass and if something needs to be done, do it. Otherwise, plan when you will get it done and deal with it at that necessary point. Then let it go. Let go of the thought and also the result and expectation tied to it.
Do this with everything that...

Mount Kinabalu and Training
Blogging’s been very infrequent lately simply because of a crazy work schedule. Don’t see it ending until the second half of August either…
However, I’m glad to say that my group of over-40 would-be mountain climbers is on its way! We’ve made concrete plans to climb Mount Kinabalu in Borneo, Malaysia, around Easter next year. We’ll book it over the next...

Using hair to protect a 'magical' place - CNN.com →
Haven’t posted for ages as I’ve been away and work’s been insane… However, having just returned from Florida whose beaches are now threatened by the BP oil spill, I couldn’t resist posting this - who would have thought such prosaic ingredients could have a magical result?

Samurai Camp: Japanese launch new war on flab
The video shows a fantastic new workout that is gaining popularity among Japanese women - its basically aerobics with swords to a Techno beat (not heard on the video). Founder Takafuji Ukon says that he liked dancing with swords and he also encourages his participants to practice their disemboweling strokes on imaginary enemies.
Ayako, a student, has...

Back but soon off again
My monitor decided I was overworking it on Saturday 22nd May and went on permanent holiday. We replaced it this morning and will assidously switch off the new baby when it’s not in use. Save yourself the trouble of replacement and save some energy as well - switch off your monitors and TVs at the mains rather than leaving them on standby!
So, I’m blogging again but will leave for the...

Meditation - it's not what you think.: The Tea... →
You must be completely awake in the present to enjoy the tea.
Only in the awareness of the present, can your hands feel the pleasant warmth of the cup.
Only in the present, can you savor the aroma, taste the sweetness, appreciate the delicacy.
If you are ruminating about the past, or…

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre - WindShadow Review
A couple of friends and I went down to the Esplanade Theatre on Wednesday 26th May to catch the 2nd performance of Taiwan’s Cloud Gate Dance Theatre troupe. This latest installation, as it is far more an art installation, than any form of dance, was called WindShadow (Feng ying in Chinese).
If you have caught the introductory sequence to the classic TV series, Twilight Zone, than youd have...

The Great Firewall of China
Anyone wondering why I went extremely quiet over the last week or so? It’s because I was visiting Beijing, China. I stayed at the Friendship Hotel there and, yes, we did have internet access. Unfortunately, China’s great firewall blocks all access to blogging platforms including Tumblr. It doesn’t stop there tho’, as the ban extends to any website creator/social media...

Pay what you want for 5 great Independent Games (Mac, Windows, Linux) - the proceeds go to EFF and Childs Play Charities, so be generous. The games include puzzler World of Goo, Aquaria, 2D sidescroller Gish, strange rabbit-oriented Lugaru and horror adventure Penumbra Overture.
Have fun and support a charity - sounds like a good mix to me!

The NICE Manifesto - Living with Warrior Heart |... →
This was an interesting post by William Harryman on Elephant Journal - he talks about how difficult it is to be nice to people.
“Being nice, as Susan points out, is not easy, and it’s not lazy, and it’s not soft. It requires us to be fully present in every moment with every person. Being nice takes warrior heart as Chogyam Trungpa pointed out so often.”
The concept of being a...

A Day Without Media?
Dr. Susan Moeller and the International Center for Media & the Public Agenda (ICMPA) released a study on American college students and the effects of living without access to mobile communications and other media ie they could not text, IM, blog, Tweet or access Facebook. Oh yes, the ban extended to TVs, radios, iPods & other music devices too.
The results? The students acted like a...

This is a fantastic article about information overload, and how we’ve all become Editors now - in order to handle the sheer volume of information in the Internet Age. You see we’re discovering meaning for ourselves and for those we write for.
Liz Danzico also lists the things we do as Editors:
Saying No
Determining the tempo
Giving out (or witholding information)
Creating...

I attended the second of two concerts of “Fantasy Comes Alive”, a chamber orchestral rendition of music from Video Games and Anime.
I’m not a big Anime fan, but have watched “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle” in the cinema and enjoyed what I saw. I have also heard snatches of the Final Fantasy themes largely from being sent Youtube videos....

The Zen of Running - a Review of Sorts
I recently downloaded the Zen of Running, a ’70s classic “Hippie” take on running from this website. It’s out of print, so I assume that the people who have made it available have done so legally.
Anyway, it’s a very short book and the pictures made me small - very classic bearded hippie running barebodied through the surf… However, I found myself identifying...
