Crude Awakening by Jane Fulton Alt

Jane Fulton Alt is a fine art photographer. Here she presents a series of photos of families as they might look if they have been swimming in oil-coated waters - it is her commentary on the recent Gulf of Mexico oil spill. She says:

Living on the shores of Lake Michigan, I am acutely aware of the disastrous toll the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has taken on all forms of life, especially as our beaches opened to the 2010 swimming season. This environmental, social and economic catastrophe highlights a much larger problem that has inflicted untold suffering as we exploit the earth’s resources worldwide.

We are all responsible for leading lives that create demand for unsustainable energy.
We are also all responsible for the solution and we must work together to protect the balance of life.

Back but soon off again

HP MonitorMy monitor decided I was overworking it on Saturday 22nd May and went on permanent holiday. We replaced it this morning and will assidously switch off the new baby when it’s not in use. Save yourself the trouble of replacement and save some energy as well - switch off your monitors and TVs at the mains rather than leaving them on standby!

So, I’m blogging again but will leave for the US (San Francisco first, then Florida) on Wednesday - no Firewalls there but finding the time to blog on a business trip always baffles me…

It also acts as a bike lock and much more, as you can use it together with an iphone to monitor effort level and information about your surroundings, including road conditions, carbon monoxide, NOx, noise, ambient temperature and relative humidity. Oh yes, and share journey details online.

The Great Squeeze - Surviving the Human Project

I’m not sure when or if I’m going to be able to see this documentary over here (might have to go with a paid download), but I hope I do. The Great Squeeze is an award-winning documentary that takes a hard look at the explosion in human population growth and compares it to collapsed societies of the past eg Mayan civilization or the Anasazi. The message is that we are living beyond our means, relying on finite natural resources that will not last forever.

Living sustainability is not just some strange green hippy movement, it’s about the survival of our species.

EO Wilson, the author of Biophilia and Consilience, pops up to make a few comments.
